Phases of the Moon, the newsletter of the Maine NVC Network
Volume Nine, Issue Four:
The Maine NVC Network Integration Program

Our newsletter appears approximately once a month. Our purpose is to contribute to the NVC learning of people who have taken at least an NVC Level 1 workshop, and help us stay connected as we endeavor to deepen a culture of peace within ourselves, our families and the world. We believe a Level 1 offers so many new ways of thinking that additional support for learning and integration could be helpful.

We endeavor to make each edition informative, connecting, inspiring and fun. Please let us know how the newsletter might contribute to your NVC well-being. Email: newsletter at mainenvcnetwork.org

Maine NVC Network Integration Program

by Peggy Smith

Often people ask me after a Level 1 workshop,
"How do I really learn this so I can use it day-to-day?"
"How do I get ‘good’ at this NVC stuff?"
"How does someone integrate this to bring more choice to every moment?"

Here in Maine we are very fortunate to have a program specifically designed to do just that. With only a few such programs in North America, we are grateful to have the opportunity to share it.

Registration is now open for the next series, beginning in September. Consider joining us for learning, growth, fun, compassion, community and expanded choice. We’d love to have you join us for this life-enriching experience. In alignment with our vision to share & deepen NVC consciousness with as many people as possible within a diverse community, we are making a special offer to participants who have authentic financial limitations. Details and application HERE.

Below, you will find photos and feedback from the 2017-18 program, which we recently wrapped up.

"NVC and the Integration Program has supported me in personally learning and growing. It’s created a warm and safe environment and community where I have learned to understand what I may be feeling and what needs I have in any situation, whether it's joyful and happy or sad and confusing.
"I’d never experienced what my dad called ‘Peace of mind’ until NVC. I had built walls and only allowed myself certain feelings because I thought that would protect me and of course that wasn’t the case. Since beginning NVC four years ago, I have become clearer and clearer of what is happening for me in all aspects of my life. It also gives me the resources and community that will support me if I struggle or get stuck.
"I am forever grateful for Peggy & Leah bringing NVC to Maine, it has given me vision that I can create something different for myself, by understanding myself better through feelings and needs." - Alicia Hafford
"It’s hard to sum up the beauty of this program. As an often harried, working mother, I often thought, "I don’t have time for this! My plate is too full!" Yet over and over, I left each weekend feeling moved, refreshed, inspired and connected. The Integration course offers many tools for ways to bridge differences with others and most important, ways to bridge difference within ourselves.
"Peggy & Leah do a wonderful job holding the group in compassion while offering us new ways to extend compassion to ourselves. The practice groups which meet in between sessions offer additional time to deepen these practices.
"Tools that I found especially useful were self-empathy and ‘the beauty of needs.’ How wonderful to learn that my needs carry seeds of their own fulfillment! Simply embracing my needs – and yes, their beauty – brings a sense of fullness and self-honoring. You don’t have to be touchy-feely or any certain way to benefit from this work. NVC and this program bring us into touch with our shared humanity. " - Carolyn
"The Integration Program has been an anchor to my year — a coming home, again and again. I have done a few Level 1’s and 2’s and enjoyed NVC, but yearned for the community more than anything. The Integration Program gives you just that — a sense of community that builds over the course of the year — the kind us ‘feelers & healers’ long for. It feels nourishing to have a steady group to ‘speak NVC’ with. I would definitely, definitely recommend it to anyone who resonates with NVC and is looking to bring their practice to new heights."
"This program has enriched my life immensely. My spouse and I did the program together and that helped us both. My intention was to develop kinder communication with my spouse (and I have) and to learn to model NVC for our kids (some progress on this also). I am grateful to the practice group which helped me stay on track and deepen my understanding of NVC in the weeks between the weekends we were together. I offer heartfelt gratitude to Peggy & Leah for organizing this wonderful experience for us."
"I had ‘learned’ NVC as part of a work situation and then through personal reading and a Level 1 training. I knew I wanted to practice NVC in order to move it into my body and daily living. The Integration Program, by addressing various modalities, suggesting practices, and offering connections between sessions, more than nourished that desire."
"The unexpected learning for me is the invitation to self-connection. This final weekend I heard my savage default system say, ‘You are not worth the effort of this work.’ I had such an ‘aha!’ in that, about my resistance. I have begun the work of offering empathy to that voice — and enjoy seeing how my strategy of meeting judgment with judgment doesn’t get me where I wish!"
"I am grateful for the help with my journey. I can imagine coming back in a couple of years for a deeper round." - Amy, from Massachusetts
"This experience has provided me a place to be my authentic self — to play when I wanted or just sit if that was what I needed in the moment. I really appreciate having a break from the ‘business model’ that public education has become. I feel that I have and can offer an alternative to the neoliberal 1 thinking that so many unknowingly subscribe to." - Kate, a Maine teacher
1 Kate defines neoliberal as "the belief that a business model should be applied to non-business institutions. It values productivity, efficiency and profit."

Traveler
by Penthea Burns

I travelled back in time today
Past moons and constellations
Hopes and failings, months and years
Past birthday celebrations

Kneeling by her bed this night
A brown haired, brown eyed girl
Smiled at my arrival saying
"I’ve got a rage in me that I’m longing to unfurl"

I meant to be her interruption
With my presence and my care
Inviting those kneeling with her, "please go"
So this child might dare to dare

Haltingly at first she spoke
With caution and concern
"There are things in my life I don’t understand quite yet
Though I’m ready now to learn"

As I listened while she spoke her truth
Time seemed to fade then disappear
"My voice inside has yearned to speak
It was me who had first to hear"

I’m a traveler in this life
And she’s a traveler too
Over miles and thoughts and dreams
We find ourselves anew

This poem was inspired by the poet’s Time Travel Empathy experience during the NVC Integration Program.
